Many of the puppets in the sequence combine one Simpsons character with one Nightmare character: Bart has become Jack Skellington, Homer has become the two-faced Mayor, Marge has become Sally, and Ned Flanders has become the bug-filled Oogie Boogie.
Sculptor Jim McKenzie reflected on working on the crossover segment in a promotional video. “Growing up, my bedroom had this painting of Jack Skellington, and then right next to it was a painting of Homer Simpson,” he said. “So it’s very kismet, this whole project.”
He added, “I think in a time of AI, to be involved with something that’s truly handmade, it’s very special these days.”
In classic “Treehouse of Horror” tradition, this year’s Halloween episode consists of three segments. One of them is a parody of Holly Gramazio’s novel The Husbands.
“It was a book that everyone was reading about two years ago when we wrote this story,” showrunner Matt Selman tells EW. “It’s a short novel about a woman whose husband, for some reason, goes up in the attic and a new man comes down and reality shifts and then she’s married to a different guy every time this guy goes up into the attic. And it’s sort of a satire on the kind of endless choice of social media dating.”
Another segment is “two parodies at once,” fusing the body-swap comedy of Freaky Friday with the horror of Pet Sematary. “Homer accidentally kills the dog and Bart and then buries them and their personalities switch,” Selman teases.
The final segment is a “wholly original” idea written by Tim Long, which sees Homer “trapped in an endless series” of cautionary movies shown in driver’s ed classes. “One is set in the past with Homer and Marge’s early marriage before they have kids — that’s The Husbands one,” Selman explains. “One is set in the present with this Freaky Friday Pet Sematary, and one is set in the future where the kids are in high school and Homer is trapped in this driver’s ed universe.”
